CPR is being performed all over the stadium as TV soccer broadcasters call out for help, and rescuers urgently carry the injured.

Elsewhere, people are feeding or spraying water on those who have collapsed and fanning them with their clothes.

A stampede broke out at the Cuscatlan stadium in the El Salvadoran capital on Saturday when spectators who had come to watch a match between professional soccer league Alianza and Paz suddenly swarmed toward a closed gate.

[Joshua Guerrero / EL SALVADOR FOOTBALL CROWD: There was a stampede, the doors collapsed, unfortunately children and elderly people were affected].

The area in and around the stadium quickly turned into chaos, and violence ensued. At least a dozen people were killed and more than 500 were injured.

One particularly gruesome stampede was broadcast live.

[Wilson Mendoza/El Sabadoro Firefighter: Initially thought to be a fire started by Alianza soccer fans, it was actually an apsa accident caused by a crowd at the south entrance].

The Associated Press reported that the game was scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m., and when the gates closed at 7:00 p.m., ticket holders couldn’t get in, so they crowded toward the closed gates, likely causing the accident.

It went on to say that authorities are investigating, believing that fake tickets were sold to create the massive crowd.
